The symptoms of this disorder have to be present in the individual for at least half a year for there to be an official diagnosis of GAD. Further, these symptoms have to be both continuous and unrelenting for the diagnosis to be made. Some of the most common symptoms of this psychological disorder are actually physical. These include headaches, fidgeting, fatigue, numbness in the feet and the hands, nausea, both muscle aches and tension, instances of difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, a hard time concentrating on even everyday tasks, sweating, agitation, irritability, rashes, having a hard time falling and staying asleep and difficulty completely controlling this anxiety.

Treatment of General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)



The treatment of choice when it comes to this disorder is a psychological approach rather than a pharmacological one. That is not to say that drugs aren't sometimes prescribed to try to help people who are suffering from GAD. However, the most effective treatments are those based on a psychological approach. For instance, cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most effective types of treatment for this disorder since it teaches patients to process thoughts in a different and healthier way. Other behavioural therapies include acceptance and commitment therapy and intolerance of uncertainty therapy. Psychological behaviour therapy can take several months to work. On the pharmacological front, antidepressants such as SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are sometimes prescribed to those suffering from GAD.
