The risk of men developing alcohol addiction or abuse over a lifetime is approximately one in five, but rehab clinics can lower this, a new study shows.
An article published in the Lancet and featured on Medical News Today shows one in ten men will develop a dependence of some sort on the substance.
The risk of alcohol addiction is lower for women, at between eight and ten per cent.
Dr Marc Schuckit's study shows rehab clinics in the US, UK and much of Europe usually establish abstinence as a goal, the news provider reports.
He states: "Despite perceptions to the contrary, efforts to help patients decrease heavy drinking commonly result in changes in behaviours and most patients with alcohol-use disorders do well after treatment."
Dr Schuckit states more than half of those entering rehab clinics for alcohol addiction treatment reduce their consumption and the majority do well after a programme of support.
Recently, the Sunset Malibu centre claimed those with a dependency on drinking need to receive help tailored to their particular needs.
