The threat of contracting a potentially deadly disease through drug addiction has been highlighted as part of World AIDS Day.
Governments, aid agencies and charities have been focussing on World AIDS Day, which takes place today (December 1st) and is designed to promote awareness of the disease and how the spread of the HIV virus can be limited.
While unprotected sex is a big cause of the spread of the disease, sharing dirty needles can also pass on the HIV virus that causes AIDS and as a result helping more people to tackle their drug addiction can work to slow the spread of the illness.
By providing greater addiction treatment services, more people can be weaned off their drug addiction and it is hoped this will help halt the rapid spread of AIDS around the world.
People in the grip of a drug addiction may be willing to risk contracting illnesses such as HIV and AIDS if their only source of a drug is through a shared needle, meaning tackling the spread of the disease goes hand-in-hand with cutting drug addiction rates.
According to the World AIDS Day website, there are over 80,000 people living with HIV in the UK, with over 7,000 new diagnoses in 2008 alone.
