The number of people receiving drug addiction treatment in Florida after abusing prescription medications is on the increase.
This is according to news-press.com, which also stated that as the number of patients continues to rise, so too do their tolerance levels.
Some 110 people receive treatment for prescription drug addiction at Southwest Florida addiction services each month, 60 of whom regularly inject drugs into their veins.
Alejandro Garcia-Barbon, the detox centre's director, said that the rise in tolerance levels has caused addicts to seek faster ways to get drugs into their system, which usually involves finding otherwise-hidden veins between the toes and fingers.
"On the streets, they call it graduating," he told the news provider.
Mr Garcia-Barbon went on to say that the danger with prescription drugs is that people can get addicted because they don't believe they're as dangerous as illegal drugs.
Last week, tampabay.com reported that increasing numbers of people in Florida are requiring help after becoming addicted to pain relief pills.
