alcohol abuse is one of the leading causes of an unseen epidemic in high blood pressure that is currently affecting one-third of people aged 16 to 34 in the UK.
That is according to the results of a survey carried out by Lloydspharmacy, in which 35 per cent of young people were tested and found to suffer from high blood pressure, typically a disease linked to old age.
According to the Daily Mail, some 20 per cent of people were said to have "severe" hypertension and the researchers were surprised at how high the figures were.
Shafeeque Mohammed, a health expert at Lloydspharmacy, claimed that while one-off tests such as these do not provide a full picture, the results were alarming.
"There are also a number of factors that can contribute to higher blood pressure including smoking, lack of physical activity, obesity, an unhealthy diet and excess alcohol," she explained.
Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, recently said that a number of people suffering from alcohol addiction in the UK are struggling to find the help they need and get access to rehabilitation.
