A police force in Hertfordshire is offering reduced penalties for those found drunk, in return for their participation in alcohol abuse programmes, a source reveals.
While the incentive of a lowered fine is present, fewer than two per cent of attendees have reoffended since attending the course, the BBC reports.
Among the activities involved in the course is watching CCTV footage of violent attacks inspired by drink abuse and a series of re-educational lessons.
Scott Rose, who took part, tells the news provider the alcohol abuse programme "is a real eye opener".
"I can actually say I will never be in that state again by my own accord. I would never wish to be in that state," he claims.
The attendee tells the source he was surprised when he calculated the number of units he consumed on nights out.
While he admits he initially took part in the abuse programme to lower the fine he was being issued, he says it had a strong impact on his perspectives.
In recent related news, the London Probation service has received praise from the justice minister David Hanson for its work reducing reoffending rates among those arrested for alcohol abuse.
