alcohol addiction is on the rise among drivers in Northern Ireland, with new statistics showing an increase in the number of motorists caught under the influence.
During the first two weeks of the Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) winter campaign, the number of drivers and motorcyclists caught drink-driving rose by 15 per cent.
There were 230 people caught, up 31 on last year's count.
Chief inspector Diane Pennington appealed for all motorists to consider the consequences of drink driving.
"Drinking and driving kills, maims and wrecks families. Police will not tolerate people who insist on driving after having taken drugs or drink.
"I do not want officers knocking on doors at any time of the year, but especially over Christmas and the New Year, to tell families that a loved one has been killed on the roads."
The British government is investing around £9 million in its Know Your Limits campaign, which aims to equip people with the facts surrounding the number of alcohol units in different drinks.
According to the NHS, men should limit their alcohol intake to no more than three-to-four units per day. Women are advised not to drink more than two-to-three alcohol units a day.
