A number of people suffering from alcohol addiction in are struggling to find the help they need, it has been warned.
Alcohol Concern said the majority have trouble finding alcohol abuse programs, citing Department of Health statistics that show only six per cent of dependent drinkers are able to access such support,
Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "In this climate of concern over public finances, to leave 94 per cent of dependent drinkers with little access to treatment is very costly."
Its own research suggests there were 24 per cent more people with moderate or severe alcohol dependency in 2007 than there were at the start of the new millennium.
In total, there are some 1.6 million drinkers who suffer from alcohol addiction, the charity has warned.
Last month, the charity claimed that minimum pricing for alcohol has now become inevitable, following the publication of new guidance by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence in support of such developments.
