A Penrith woman who set fire to her own car to try and claim £1,300 to settle her debts has been brought in front of a judge, it has been reported.
Nicola Ash has been described by her legal counsel as having a personality disorder linked to anxiety and depression and has been ordered by the court to undergo a six-month alcohol abuse program, according to the News and Star.
Helped by a neighbour, the accused set out to solve her money worries by destroying her own vehicle.
Police officers, however, were waiting at her house before she returned home holding an empty can of petrol she had used.
Marion Wolfe, defence barrister for Ms Ash, told the court: "This offence clearly arises out of her mental condition. It is not the sort of thing she would normally do."
In addition to the alcohol addiction treatment order, the offender has been told to carry out 200 hours unpaid community work and given a three-month prison sentence, suspended for a year.
The Daily Mail recently reported a woman charged with manslaughter after stabbing her ex-boyfriend in the leg with scissors had post traumatic stress disorder and a history of alcohol abuse.
