New figures have found that many Britons may come back from holiday in need of alcohol addiction treatment because they drink much more when enjoying a break abroad.
According to statistics compiled by the Department of Health, the average British adult abroad consumes eight alcoholic drinks per day, which could lead to them getting hooked and seeking out addiction recovery services when they return to the UK.
Public health minister Gillian Merron said it can be easy for people to slip into the habit of drinking excessively while on holiday, but warned it is often difficult to get back into a normal routine once back in Britain.
As a result, more people could find themselves drinking more heavily while at work, which could result in them becoming addicted to alcohol and in need of a stint at a rehab centre to help them beat their problems.
The UK government is currently considering a range of measures to curb excessive drinking in Britain, with a ban on so-called happy hours and minimum prices on all alcoholic drinks among the ideas that have been put forward.
