There is a growing level of alcohol abuse in society, experts on the misuse of the intoxicating substance have warned.
According to the Institute of Alcohol Studies, the widespread nature of the problem is being overlooked as a result of a tendency to confine substance abuse issues as relevant to only certain segments of society.
Dr Rachel Seabrook, research manager at the Institute of Alcohol Studies, said: "Whichever section of the population you look at, problems are increasing.
"So to try and pick off particularly vulnerable populations will tend to make other groups of people think they are ok."
The institute's comments echo those of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, which has also claimed that Brits are increasingly misusing alcohol.
It is believed that more than ten million people now drink regularly above the government issued alcohol healthcare guidelines, which could have serious repercussions on their long-term health.
The committee revealed earlier this month that alcohol misuse costs the NHS around £2.7 billion per year.
