A new study has highlighted the dangers that untreated alcohol addiction can have on the brain, suggesting it can lead to abnormalities in emotional perceptions and memory.
Experts from Boston University School of Medicine found that a "broad spectrum" of emotional changes are often experienced by alcoholics, demonstrating the importance of undergoing proper addiction treatment to help people overcome their problem.
The study asked alcoholics to look at the facial expressions of others and found that chronic alcoholics, even those who had been sober for a long period of time, showed abnormal brain activity when looking at the expressions.
Many of those involved in the study showed atypical judgments regarding the nature of facial emotional expressions, leading the researchers to conclude that the alcoholics had suffered significant changes to the brain.
Tackling alcohol addiction requires rehab clinics to consider a whole range of issues associated with a patient's alcoholism, considering the reasons behind the addiction as well as helping the person to stop reaching for the bottle when they leave the rehab centre.
Many rehab clinics now employ a wide range of tactics to help people beat their problems, creating tailored addiction recovery programmes designed to fit the individual's specific needs.
