Drinkaware has launched a new campaign aimed at highlighting the risks of drinking in the home.
The alcohol charity says people should be aware of their drinking habits by taking note of how often they fill their recycling boxes or visit bottle banks, as this could indicate alcohol abuse.
Chairman Derek Lewis says drinking at home can lull people into a false sense of security as they do not realise how much they drink.
"But the reality is that many people are unwittingly at risk from the long-term health problems associated with drinking too much alcohol," he comments.
Entitled Alcohol: How much is too much?, the £1 million campaign will run in cities around the UK.
Dr Michael Wilks, president of the Standing Committee of European Doctors, adds that people should stick to the recommended unit guidelines so they can enjoy alcohol without putting their health at risk.
Earlier this month, comma Drinkaware welcomed calls for further discussions on cut-price alcohol.
It said a safe and responsible approach towards drinking alcohol must be taken in order to reduce alcohol abuse.
