It has been claimed that treatment for alcohol addiction could be aided by using a commonly prescribed drug.
Top American cardiologist Dr Olivier Ameisen has claimed that a drug often used as a muscle relaxant could help to counter the effects of alcohol addiction and improve the chances of a person staying sober.
Dr Ameisen has written a book on the subject serialised by the Daily Mail in which he details his own experiences of the impact of the drug.
He claims that the drug helped him to overcome his own addiction as part of a programme of alcohol treatment.
However, his claims remain highly controversial, with most experts pointing out that the best remedy for alcohol addiction remains getting professional treatment from rehab clinics that can help to support the addict.
The drug rehabilitation Network has recently suggested that rehab centres are well-placed to help people battle their addictions because they are able to provide personal contact with a trained professional, who can help an addict cope with their problem over a long period of time.
