March 1st saw the launch of National Problem Gambling Awareness Week in the US and the state of Arizona has thrown its weight behind the event by unveiling a number of events designed to promote discussion of gambling addiction and highlight the ways in which addicts can get help.
Governor Janice Brewer has revealed that the state will be holding a symposium for counsellors and medical professionals involved in dealing with gambling addicts, such as those who work at rehab centres in the state.
A wide variety of speakers will attend the event, with some focussing on the way the brain works and how people can become addicted to gambling, while others will look at ways to deal with the issues associated with gambling addiction, including the emotional problems it can cause.
The move follows a similar plan being unveiled in Florida, where gambling addiction has been growing significantly in recent times.
Since the state relaxed laws surrounding blackjack, figures have revealed a surge in the number of people complaining of addiction to the game.
Blackjack has now overtaken poker as the number one gambling addiction in Florida, the survey showed.
