There is growing concern about a rise in the number of people seeking addiction treatment for gambling problems in Paisley, Scotland.
According to the Paisley Daily Express, there are fears that the town is becoming a home for addicts and more work needs to be done to help get them the treatment they need.
The newspaper reports that the town has at least 26 bookmakers, with 50 across the region of Renfrewshire and that has fuelled concerns that the level of gambling in the area could be on the rise, leading more people to head to addiction rehab clinics.
Andy Todd, a counsellor with the Renfrewshire Council for Alcohol Trust, which offers specialist help on all matters of addiction including gambling, told the newspaper: "What I have to ask is would the policymakers let another pub open in a street where there are already so many other pubs?"
He continued: "They need to be aware that alcohol and gambling cause similar problems."
There are concerns across the UK and in other countries that the current global recession could lead to a sharp rise in people seeking treatment at rehabilitation clinics for problems associated with gambling.
As people lose their jobs, some have turned to gambling in a bid to keep their head above water and that could lead to more addiction problems.
