A metropolitan community in Detroit is aiming to combat the issue of drug addiction after the deaths of ten people in the area from heroin overdoses in the last three years.
The latest was an 18-year-old high school graduate, and the tragic case sparked a meeting of Pinckney's residents as they seek a solution to the intensifying problem, clickondetroit.com reports.
Cody Buck, a 19-year-old receiving drug addiction intervention, told the meeting that he had been using heroin for two to three years, despite the number of overdoses in the region.
"It's absolutely mind-boggling how many people are using. People just don't know," the news provider quoted him as saying.
Mr Buck went on to speak candidly about how he came close to losing his life after putting too much heroin in his needle and falling unconscious.
Local parent Sheila Bennett said that heroin addiction is "out of control" in Pinckney and called on the community to come together to defeat the problem.
Elsewhere in the US, NorthJersey.com reports that, according to Vernon police force veteran Brian Jernick, heroin is "by far the number one problem facing high school students and graduates".
