A recent panel discussion held in Wisconsin has highlighted the impact that a gambling addiction has not only on the individual with the problem, but also on their friends and family.
Speaking at the Kalahari Resort, a recovering gambling addict joined with the ex-wife of an addict and two gambling addiction treatment providers to discuss and explain the problem.
According to Wisconsin Dells Events, the discussion provided an opportunity to give an insight into the lives of the people affected by gambling addiction and helped to show the signs that a person has a problem, making it easier for others to spot the issue early.
One of those speaking at the discussion said she was pushed into getting help from a local gambling addiction support service by her family, but initially only did it to keep her family off her back.
"I was going to get the literature, show my family, then go back to gambling," she said.
However, slowly she changed her habits and has beaten her addiction to gambling, although she admits she will never gamble again in case it triggers her addiction once more.
The Sunset Malibu rehab clinic has called on friends and family to be brave and make the first move when confronting those with addiction problems. It suggests people should be willing to make an intervention, even though that could be a painful step to begin with.
