Residents in Cumbria are being warned about the risks of alcohol abuse as the party season kicks in.
Figures show 30 per cent of violent crime in the area is a result of alcohol abuse and the problem affects people of all ages and walks of life, reports the North-West Evening Mail.
Charlotte Chorlton, locality health improvement specialist with NHS Cumbria's public health team in Barrow, says people are not always aware of the safe limits for drinking and can slip into alcohol abuse easily.
"Drinks are generally getting stronger and providers often sell large glasses of alcohol to tempt people to spend and drink more," she tells the newspaper.
She says that consuming drink reduces inhibitions and can lead to some taking risky behaviour such as having unprotected sex.
Ms Chorlton advises people to know their limits and know how many units are in each beverage, before they need the help of alcohol clinics.
She says having a "comfortable level of alcohol can enhance your evening" but going overboard will result in problems.
The city of Southampton has recently been awarded £300,00 from the Home Office to help tackle binge drinking and alcohol abuse in the area, reports the Southern Daily Echo.
It has been identified as one of 50 hotspots for problems in the UK and the money will be used to tackle underage drinking and tougher enforcement of laws.
