A new charity has been established in Saudi Arabia for the benefit of families with relatives in need of drug addiction treatment.
Rahmah, which means 'tender care', has been set up by journalist Sahar Al-Bandar after discovering the likelihood that wives and children of drug addicts can become substance abusers themselves, arabnews.com reports.
According to the country's General Directorate of Narcotic Control, there is a 35 per cent increase of domestic violence in families containing either a drug addict or an alcoholic.
Ms Al-Bandar told the news provider that Rahmah's goal is to rehabilitate affected families by giving them the knowledge and means to identify an addiction and take the appropriate steps to combat it.
"We also work on enhancing the self esteem of family members through specialists to protect them from falling into the same trap," she explained.
Ms Al-Bandar went on to say that poverty is among the reasons why former drug addicts return to drug use, and that one of Rahmah's other aims is to help recovering addicts find jobs.
In 2007, Saudi Arabia launched the National Committee for Combating Drugs to aid both drug addicts and their families, Reuters reported at the time.
