A new drug addiction centre designed for teenagers will open its doors in Nova Scotia later this month.
The facility, which will be located in the west end of Halifax, will contain 14 beds for young people in the region in need of drug addiction support, the Chronicle Herald reports.
This is in spite of protests by local residents, some of whom have expressed concern that drug activity in the city could increase.
Due to be opened by the IWK Health Centre, there is a chance that residents' fears could cause the opening of the drug addiction facility to be delayed until the beginning of July.
A spokeswoman from the organisation told the newspaper that communications with the local community association were ongoing.
According to Health Canada, in 2008 11.4 per cent of Canadians aged 15 and over had used cannabis, a fall from the 14.1 per cent recorded in 2004.
The use of cocaine, ecstasy, speed and methamphetamine in 2008 were comparable to the rates recorded four years previously.
