Local residents in Baton Rouge have come together to discuss the joint issues of drug and alcohol addiction in the city.
During an event at Shiloh Baptist Church, which was sponsored by drug addiction treatment facility O'Brien House, recovering addicts spoke about their positive experiences of drug addiction therapy, wafb.com reports.
Approximately 100 locals turned up at the meeting, where former alcoholic John Land was one of those who spoke.
"I've been in and out of jail and drugs and alcohol my entire lifetime and I've finally decided to make a change," the news provider quoted him as saying.
Mr Land went on to say that receiving alcohol addiction intervention was the most important step he had taken in his life, and that he wished he had done so years earlier.
O'Brien House representative Yolanda Mulkey also spoke at the event. She said that drug and alcohol addiction is becoming increasingly common among sixth, eighth and tenth graders.
The meeting comes after Louisiana governor Piyush Jindal's announcement to reduce the instances of drink driving in the state.
Many addiction services in the region are provided by the Louisiana Office for Addictive Disorders, which runs 24-hour hotlines for those in need of drug or gambling addiction support.
