It has been claimed that the majority of men with drug addictions have become addicts after prolonged drug use aimed at improving their sexual pleasure.
According to a study of 120 drug addicts carried out by the University of Granada in Spain, seven out of ten men have become addicted because they use drugs to lose their sexual inhibitions and get more pleasure from sex.
However, the survey also found that many of those drug addicts take cocaine, a drug which increases sexual incapacitation the most, the researchers said.
The research could help to understand more about drug addicts' behaviour and provide clues as to how to develop addiction treatments to help men tackle these problems.
Meanwhile, the study also found that nearly 44 per cent of women consume drugs to lower their inhibitions, but while most men chose cocaine for that purpose, the study found that in women alcohol was the drug of choice in most cases.
Many drug rehab clinics promote the use of tailored addiction treatment programmes as a way of dealing with addicts, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.
The Sunset Malibu rehab clinic, for example, has recently claimed a personal approach can have the best impact on tackling drug addiction.
