The level of drug addiction at Wellingborough prison in Northamptonshire has become a serious concern, it has been revealed.
According to a report from chief inspector of prisons Dame Anne Owers, one in six inmates at the prison are now addicted to some form of drug and need addiction treatment.
In a damning report on the state of the prison, Dame Anne slated the design and general maintenance of Wellingborough, while also warning that drug use was becoming increasingly prevalent, fuelling drug-related violence.
Many of the prisoners could benefit from getting proper drug addiction treatment from dedicated rehab clinics, which can offer a tailored programme that suits the needs of the specific individual.
In the US, one prison has been using a rather unusual method of addiction treatment to help inmates beat their drug addictions.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Baltimore jail has employed acupuncture over the past 16 years to help patients overcome their addictions.
While the jail's authorities admit there is no scientific proof that the ancient Chinese remedy works any better than a placebo, they have found that some patients have responded well to the treatment and beaten their addiction while in prison.
