People suffering from drug addictions have been warned of the dangers of attempting to give up on their own.
Robert Locker, writing for the Indianapolis Addiction and Recovery Examiner, has highlighted how dangerous it can be for a person suffering with an addiction to attempt to go cold turkey without any medical or professional help.
While in most cases, such attempts will fail because the drug addict is unable to beat the intense cravings he or she endures, Mr Locker explains that addiction withdrawal symptoms can become so intense that they will cause significant damage to the body.
"It can be dangerous, even lethal," he warned.
However, Mr Locker added that a drug addict is "going to die a very nasty death from your addiction someday" unless he or she tackles the problem.
As a result, he suggests a person suffering from an addiction should head to a rehab clinic where they can be properly assessed and looked after by trained professionals.
This will not only ensure an addict has the right support to begin their addiction recovery, but also allows an expert to oversee their body's reaction to the rehabilitation process.
This means that, if necessary, drugs can be administered to deal with the withdrawal symptoms suffered by the body.
Tackling the addiction withdrawal symptoms is the first and often most physically demanding stage in overcoming an addiction, although a successful stint in a rehab centre usually also requires an individual to engage emotionally with their inner demons.
