Harris County in Texas has been helping to get local people with drug addictions the treatment they need to deal with their problems without simply sending them to jail.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the courts have provided an important service to the area and enabled local people to enter rehab clinics and get the treatment that has managed to transform their lives.
One of the first people to be involved in the project was cocaine addict Kathryn Griffin, who got the addiction treatment she needed to turn her world around.
She has since become a community outreach liaison for Houston councilman Peter Brown and a volunteer with the drug courts.
Using the Success Through addiction recovery (Star) addiction treatment programme, repeat offenders with drug problems can be placed on deferred adjudication for four years while they receive addiction treatment.
The move can help prevent many people ending up in jail and also gives them the opportunity to tackle their problem head-on.
Many rehab clinics across the US and UK currently offer services tailored to the needs of each individual drug addict.
This approach enables people to get the personal attention and addiction treatment that can help them beat their problem, rather than become involved in a one-size-fits-all scheme that does little to address their own personal issues.
