While overcoming addiction is a personal choice, it can only be achieved through external help, a company claims.

According to Sunset Malibu (SM), a treatment centre in California, those seeking to overcome their dependencies must make a personal decision to do so.

Despite this individual act of will, the organisation claims the services it supplies are essential if the detox process if to be completed successfully.

SM asserts recovery can only be achieved in conjunction with professional rehabilitation services, stating it is impossible without external support.

"If you're going to get better, it's going to be because you resolve to take up the fight and to see the healing process through to its conclusions," the organisation says.

SM claims drug addiction strips victims of their dignity and reduces them to shells of who they once were.

While emphasising the help which can be offered by rehabilitation centres, it states dependency is ultimately a personal disease which must be resolved on these terms.
