The chief executive of drug addiction charity Drugscope has suggested that a rise in the number of people taking cocaine is not surprising.
The 'Drug misuse declared: Findings from the British Crime Survey 2008/09' report, which is produced by the Home Office, revealed that the number of 16 to 59-year-olds using cocaine powder has risen from 2.4 per cent to three per cent from the previous year.
When the figures are viewed for the 16 to 24-year-old age bracket, the increase stands at 1.5 per cent.
Martin Barnes, the chief executive of Drugscope, labelled the cocaine drug figures as "not necessarily a surprise".
Mr Barnes also highlighted the dangers cocaine can present.
"Cocaine is a harmful drug with numerous physical and mental health implications and it is vital that public health messages around the effects of cocaine use remain clear and sustained," he said.
Those wishing to combat addition to the drug could consider visiting a cocaine rehab centre or other addiction programmes.
Drugscope states that it is the UK's leading supplier of drug information and it aims to educate the public on the dangers various substances can present and to advise on policy making.
