Early identification of people experiencing alcohol addiction is essential in order to effectively tackle the problem, a charity claims.
A spokesperson for Alcohol Concern states offering advice at this stage is often the best way to help reduce the harm drink abuse can cause.
Interventions of this sort are a proven way to reduce the number of people experiencing these conditions, the representative claims.
The spokesperson identifies potential reductions both in drinking and related crimes as a benefit of early screening, as those with the potential to develop more serious problems can be referred to a rehab treatment centre.
According to the representative, the cost of this action will be balanced with cuts in both disorder and unlawful behaviour.
The spokesperson adds: "Too many heavy drinkers are not identified at an early stage, which means they go on to develop more serious problems with alcohol, leading them to committing crime, acts of domestic violence and developing serious health harms."
According to the Department of Health, every pound spend on treating substance addiction saves the UK £9.50.
