Cannabis is currently a Class C drug and talks of reclassifying this drug did not come to a change. However, does downgrading a drug like ecstasy encourage people to use the drug more? The police seem to think so and believe that the drug does kill around 50 a year from use of ecstasy, with approximately a quarter of a million a year using the drug.
A professor at Oxford states that ecstasy does not harm as much as crack cocaine and heroin. Therefore, downgrading it could be an option.
Possession of Class A and B drugs do carry heavy prison sentences. So if ecstasy were to be reclassified to a Class B drug, the maximum prison sentence would only be reduced from 7 years to 5 years.
For anyone currently in need of help with a drug problem, Entry to a choice of rehab clinics is a good idea. Change can assist with the first step on a path to addiction treatment.
