cocaine addiction treatment can be helped by the presence of a stimulating environment, a new study asserts.
Research produced by the Institut de Physiologie et Biologie Cellulaire (CNRS/Universite de Poitiers) suggests substance abuse rehabilitation is more effective in these conditions, Science Daily reports.
The study proposes an "enriched environment" can minimise the effects of cocaine withdrawal and substance addiction-related behaviours.
According to the news provider, surroundings which are designed to engage curiosity and which involve activities and exploration will help.
It was performed on mice, with behaviours related to cocaine addiction disappearing in those housed in the "enriched environments".
The theory behind the tests is that the environment reduces the amount of active time for areas of the brain related to cocaine abuse, as these are part of the cause of drug relapse.
According to a recent study by Manchester University's National Drug Evidence Centre, those who enter drug addiction treatments are half as likely to commit crimes on their release as those who do not.
This was determined by comparing information from the National drug treatment Monitoring System and the Police National Computer.
