Lisa Ashworth spent three decades hooked on drugs and is now taking part in a Lancashire campaign to figure out the most effective methods of addiction treatment.
After being dependent on a range of drugs from slimming pills to heroin, Ms Ashworth is reportedly clean, has started to rebuild her relationship with her children and is studying to be a drugs and alcohol worker, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Her case was part of a debate at the Manchester town hall yesterday over how drug addiction should be controlled, whether by prescribed medication such as methadone or through going completely drug-free.
Ms Ashworth told the publication: "People abuse methadone by taking a week's dose at once or taking it with other, illegal substances. It's best to quit completely, even though the devil's on your shoulder."
In other news, Teen Challenge UK recently performed a musical called The Journey in Uttoxeter to raise awareness of the risks associated with heroin, the Uttoxeter Advertiser reported.
