Family support is the key to drug rehabilitation programmes, because they cannot do it on their own, the mother of a former substance addict asserts.
Kathleen Wood suggests relatives of people with these problems should seek assistance and advice online from others in similar positions, the Press and Journal reports.
"There must be hundreds of families in my position in Aberdeen but there is still a stigma with drugs and a lot of people are not happy to come out of the woodwork," she says.
Urging families to seek others with relatives in a similar situation, she tells the news provider people "cannot do it on their own".
Describing her own experiences, Ms Wood says when she went through the process of dealing with her son's drug addiction she had no support and no-one to turn to.
"I did not know where to turn and was at my wit's end," she asserts.
Scottish community safety minister Fergus Ewing claims family support is "absolutely key" to dealing with a drug abuse problem, the source reports.
He says this foundation can help people with substance addiction issues face up to their condition.
Last month, Tom Halpin, the temporary chief constable of Lothian and Borders police, criticised people who let their children binge drink in their family home.
