More funding needs to be provided to help those receiving alcohol addiction treatment because the current system is inadequate.
This is according to drug and alcohol addiction charity Addaction, which has called for "far more money" to help boost the provision of treatment programmes.
A spokesman from the charity said that, despite drug-related problems receiving all the attention in the media, alcohol is "one of the biggest, if not the biggest" problems Addaction deals with.
"I think one of the key things to remember is that if somebody has got a drink problem it affects everybody around them," he explained.
"Every adult, I would say, will at least know somebody who drinks problematically - that gives you an idea of how widespread the problem is."
A recent report from Alcohol Concern revealed a 24 per cent increase in the number of dependent drinkers in England between 2000 and 2007.
There are now 1.6 million people reliant on alcohol, with only six per cent of these able to access alcohol addiction support programmes.
