Researchers in the US have received a grant from the country's government to investigate drug addiction and to hopefully find a treatment to combat the problem.
In potentially exciting news for those receiving drug addiction intervention, scientists at the University of Missouri in Kansas City have been handed a $1.8 million (£1.2 million) federal grant, the Associated Press reports.
The money will also be used to investigate mental illnesses, with the researchers believing that these and drug addiction are two of the biggest problems facing the world's population.
Dr John Wang, of the university, will lead the new study, with he and his colleagues specialising in the molecular mechanisms surrounding drug addiction and mental illness.
He said that he hoped the new research will lead to the development of new treatments that can target a particular neurotransmitter in the brain, which will allow drug addiction to be overcome.
Meanwhile, findings from UT Southwestern Medical Center published in March suggested that increasing neurogenesis may prevent drug addiction and patients relapsing.
