The first drug addiction centre designed exclusively for women in Bangalore is proving a success two years after it was founded.
With the city being home to 40 drug addiction facilities for men, Divyyaa Bajaj decided to establish the Miracle Foundation in 2008 to cater for the needs of female addicts in the southern Indian city, the Bangalore Mirror reports.
The centre is now going from strength to strength and boasts a 38 per cent recovery rate, notably higher than the universal average of 35 per cent.
Ms Bajaj told the newspaper that the needs of female drug addicts in Bangalore had long been neglected.
"Addiction is a medical issue that requires numerous ongoing behavioural, medical and recovery support services," she explained.
Today, patients as young as 15 receive drug addiction treatment at the Miracle Foundation, and the age range extends right the way to 60-year-old female addicts.
According to the organisation, the age group most in need of drug addiction intervention are women aged between 21 and 30.
A report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime recently stated that the impact of drug abuse upon women in India can only be understood within the context of women's status in the country.
