The Christmas period is a good time for relatives to notice that members of their families may be in need of addiction support.
This is according to the Daily Pilot's Chris Mears, who said that festive parties and gatherings can serve as a "point of hope and clarity" for those in need of alcohol abuse support.
"Some common signs of alcoholism and addiction are slurred speech, restlessness, sudden weight loss or gain, confusion, or disorientation, or dramatic changes in a person's daily life such as decreased performance at work," he explained.
Mr Mears went on to say that, as long as the signs are recognised by family members, it is possible for an affected individual to fully recover thanks to the effectiveness of alcohol abuse programmes.
While addiction centres are crucial to an affected person's recovery, Mr Mears stressed the importance of family members, who provide the moral support to help loved ones combat their addiction problem.
Further signals to look out for include reduced levels of ambition, with those in need of alcohol abuse advice often placing less emphasis on achieving individual targets and aspirations.
According to the American Council for Drug Education, there are as many as 15 million problem drinkers or alcoholics in the US.
