The harrowing experiences of former heroin addict Richard Farrell have been put onto film in an effort to show others that addiction recovery is possible.
Mr Farrell's documentary, High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, together with his memoirs, have caused something of a stir in the US, as they highlight the difficult lives of people suffering from addiction and provide an insight into the challenges faced by those seeking addiction rehabilitation.
"I had no ambition when I was growing up here, none," the ex-addict told the Boston Globe.
He attributes this in part to his initial slide into heroin addiction, but his remarkable addiction recovery and subsequent efforts to tackle the problem head-on by making a film about the issue have helped turn his life around.
The experiences of Mr Farrell are a prime example of how rehab and addiction recovery services can transform lives and make a significant difference to society.
Although the problems of drug culture continue to pervade society, there remain many rehab clinics and other addiction recovery services that can be accessed to help people overcome their demons.
