A former alcohol addiction sufferer has been awarded an MBE after setting up an alcohol rehabilitation clinic, a source reveals.
Noreen Oliver, founder of the Burton addiction centre (BAC), tells the Burton Mail she nearly died 16 years ago, after being hospitalised with cirrhosis of the liver.
At her lowest point, she weighed six stone and was unable to stomach food, but attended an alcohol abuse rehab clinic in Nottingham and overcame her dependency.
While undergoing treatment, she met people with drug addiction problems and realised many did not have the support which was available to her, the news provider reports.
Ms Oliver states the BAC's high success rate is due to their focus on getting those recovering from their dependency to reintegrate themselves with society.
"I think that's because we do not create victims but we give our clients responsibility and help them recuperate that way," she tells the source.
A recent study by the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre has found a connection between the parts of the brain which deal with reward and stress responses, which could be used to deal with drug or alcohol abuse.
