A former heroin addict who now spends her time helping those who are addicted has won an award for her efforts.
Fiona Walsh, 22, now has a role as a trainee development worker at the Volunteer Centre Angus in Arbroath, was put forward for the Mearns and Angus Young Employee of the Year for her efforts helping other addicts, the Arbroath Herald reports.
Centre manager Gary Malone apparently nominated her for the award. He told the paper: "Fiona's message to drug users is authentic and fully understanding of the circumstances and situations they face. Her work makes a phenomenal difference to their lives."
He added that as a result of the volunteering efforts she makes both within this region and across Scotland, addicts are helped to turn their lives around through education or volunteering.
Miss Walsh also works with schools to raise awareness of drug use and the dangers associated with it, the paper reports.
Elsewhere in Scotland, councillors in Aberdeen were scheduled to discuss whether a new specialist clinic should be created. The clinic would specialise solely in the treatment of heroin addicts and would offer a pure form of the drug for use on the site.
