The manager of a pub has stolen money from the business in order to pay for his gambling addiction, a source reveals.
A court has heard how Stephen Wallace fled the country with the money before returning to hand himself in, the Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter states.
Maggie Porter, the fiscal depute, told Dumbarton Sheriff Court the defendant's parents had repaid the stolen takings.
His gambling addiction resulted in debts caused by a number of bad bets and he stole nearly £3,911 from The Counting House's premises.
According to the news provider, his lawyer Steven Wight described his client as being in "significant debt" as a result of his gambling addiction.
"[He was] desperately trying to recover from a situation that was not really recoverable," he asserts.
The lawyer continued by telling the source Mr Wallace had taken steps to tackle his gambling addiction.
He will now face 160 hours of community service.
According to charity GamCare, tell-tale signs that people have a gambling addiction include using the practice to escape from their problems, developing financial issues due to losses while playing and having a perceived inability to strop or control it.
