A rehabilitation expert has warned against the negative effects of introducing legalised gambling in the US.
Franklin Lisnow, executive director of the Centre for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Hospital, told the Denver Daily that a new revenue stream will not offset the health costs of gambling addiction treatment.
The White House recently approved a bill which is set to allow adults to gamble online so it can take advantage of a tax on bets, amounting to a predicted $42 billion (£27 billion) over ten years.
Mr Lisnow explained that the bill could lead to Denver residents with sensitivities to gambling addictions spending their money "foolishly".
"It just opens more doors to social problems," he added.
WAMC Northeast Public Radio recently suggested that increasing numbers of teenagers in New York State could require gambling addiction support as the popularity of betting continues to spread among the youngsters.
