People suffering from prescription drug addiction need to receive better support from the government and should be given greater access to addiction treatment, it has been suggested.
According to Management in Practice, the Earl of Sandwich spoke in the House of Lords on the subject of prescription drug addictions, explaining his own personal experience of the damaging effect a lack of proper addiction treatment can have.
"A member of my own family is confined to his room. He is trying to withdraw from one of these drugs. He can't work, he can't take the children to school," the peer revealed.
He went on to criticise the standard of care provided by the government, suggesting that more should be done to help create an intervention.
"There is no government benefit or assistance for people in this situation," the earl said, according to the publication.
Experts have claimed prescription drug addiction can often be overlooked when policies on helping people with addiction are developed, as ministers and police will often focus their concerns on those suffering from illegal drug addictions such as cocaine or heroin.
