The makers of Irish stout Guinness are to be the first firm to include the number of units its drinks contain on the side of their branded glasses, which could help reduce the number engaging in alcohol abuse.
It will show drinkers the beverage contains 2.3 units of alcohol per pint and is hoped to help customers stay within the recommended guideline amounts.
The company will be distributing 500,000 glasses and is the first draught beer to provide this information.
John Ruscoe, the marketing director for Guinness, claims the new receptacles will be used to kick off the company's 250 year anniversary.
"If the glasses are effective it would be good to see units on glassware becoming more widespread, This is one way we can help people drink sensibly," he claims.
The companys initial run of the glasses will be distributed to bars, pubs and clubs throughout the UK.
Dr Rachel Seabrook, research manager at the Institute of Alcohol Studies, claims the chief medical officers advice for under-15s not to be allowed to drink is part of a series of measures aiming to tackle alcohol abuse among the young.
