Debt and a heroin addiction reportedly played a part in an Aberdeen man transporting £2,250 worth of cannabis by car, according to a source.
The BBC claimed 22-year-old Dane Bower fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle on the A90, causing it to crash.
Officers then discovered he had been carrying the haul.
Solicitor Michael Munro, who was defending the accused, said: "He has had a drug problem for many years. He realises he needs to take steps to change his lifestyle."
Mr Bower pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis resin, but his legal counsel revealed he had aided the police in finding the drugs, which he had thrown into a field after the crash.
In addition to a 14-month jail term for his offences, he was banned from driving for four years, which was also due to him being previously disqualified from driving and having no insurance.
Worksop Today recently reported a man from Bircotes broke into two pensioners' bungalows and stole money and other items was doing it to fund his heroin abuse.
