A new campaign has been launched by the government to stamp out alcohol addiction and help reduce the number of people needing to head to rehab clinics to tackle their problems.
In a move that could help addiction recovery among alcoholics, the Campaign for Smarter Drinking has been endorsed by a number of major industry organisations, with 45 companies backing the £100 million programme.
It is hoped this support from organisations will help increase the education among drinkers of the dangers of alcohol addiction and could encourage more people who may suspect they have a problem to head to a rehab centre to find the support they need.
"Clearly the industry has a responsibility to play their part in tackling this problem and I hope this campaign will make a real difference to people's attitudes to drunkenness and their drinking behaviour," said health secretary Andy Burnham.
alcohol addiction among young people has been increasingly documented, but it has recently been pointed out that many older people are struggling with alcoholism.
A survey carried out by alcohol and drug charity Foundation66 revealed 13 per cent of people over 60 drink more after retiring, while 19 per cent use alcohol to beat depression.
