A cross-party effort is required in order to crack down on alcohol abuse in Northern Ireland, a Social Democratic and Labour Party representative states.
Foyle assembly member Pat Ramsey has suggested a number of measures could be implemented which allow action to be taken against what he describes as "the single most challenging" issue society is presented with.
He states: "The policy initiatives I will outline are in place, or being considered, in other regions."
Mr Ramsey says price, consumption, accessibility, regulation and promotion are the issues which will allow the government to reduce alcohol abuse rates.
He suggests the measures will permit a "cultural shift" to take place which will discourage alcohol abuse in favour of "healthier lifestyles".
Identifying the time as being "right" for change, Mr Ramsey states things are becoming worse and believes delaying taking action will only make change harder to enact.
In related news, social workers in Northern Ireland are currently giving alcohol addiction treatment to an 11-year-old boy.
Social services were called to his home after reports a child had been drinking with a number of adults.
