Gambling can be compared to drug addiction and is a problem of significant magnitude in Malaysia.
This is according to malaysiakini.com's Richard Loh, who wrote that despite gambling being an integral part of far eastern culture, people should realise the risks involved.
He compared gambling addiction to drug addiction because of the lack of control that those affected experience.
"Small bets will eventually turn into bigger bets and with most cases greed will set in," Mr Loh stated.
"Once you are addicted to gambling, there is no stopping."
Another problem, Mr Loh went on to explain, is that those requiring gambling addiction intervention often resort to desperate measures to fund their habit - which often involves stealing cash from family and friends.
He also suggested the Malaysia's government should not issue more gambling licences; a measure he believes will help discourage gambling.
Earlier this month, the Malaysian Insider reported that if a parent requires gambling addiction help at some point in the lives, their children are more likely to in later life.
