An alcohol treatment clinic is opening on the Isle of Skye with the aim of reducing this form of substance abuse.
The island, which has 5,000 inhabitants, has been sent a nurse specialising in alcohol care after hospital admission rates for detoxification were found to be 80 per cent higher than the national average.
With the opening of the rehab centre, it is hoped this figure will be further reduced, freeing up hospital beds for other patients.
Neil Turner, the alcohol liaison nurse, has had more than 400 referrals in the two years he has held the position.
He says there are currently around 100 hospital admissions each year of alcoholics seeking detox services but states the new rehab centre could reduce this by up to a half.
"The reason more people were being admitted was because there were fewer alternatives for treatment for alcohol addictions," he states.
In recent related news, a spokesperson for Alcohol Concern claims early identification of those at risk could reduce the number of people requiring alcohol abuse treatment.
The representative states offering advice and information before a substance addiction develops can allow this problem to be avoided.
