The London Probation service has been praised for its work in keeping those who engaged in alcohol abuse from continuing to commit crimes.
David Hanson, the justice minister, was visiting an alcohol rehabilitation programme for those undergoing community sentences when he made the comments.
He pointed out the damage alcohol abuse can cause, stating it can "devastate lives" and highlighting the number of people who are affected by its impact.
"It not only does immense damage to health, but alcohol misuse can also be a driver of crime," he claims.
The schemes in Southwark are succeeding at reducing the rate of reoffending and the number engaging in this form of substance abuse, the minister says.
Statistics published by the Ministry of Justice reveal the frequency of adults reoffending has fallen by 13 per cent between 2005 and 2006.
Mr Hanson states: "We have a moral duty to make our communities safer and protect the public from harm."
In related news, Manchester University's National Drug Evidence Centre has found results suggesting undergoing rehab treatment reduces the likelihood of people experiencing drug addiction reoffending.
